What do these wooden CD-cases cost? I really like them!

Good question. How many would you like to have?

I need to get some leather for the hinge and spend some time for lasering and glueing. If you like to have your own art-work engraved (front-, inner- and/or back-side): it’s possible, but takes of course more time (give me vector-files and it needs less).

So on the one hand I could make a single piece more expensive and more pieces cheaper – or I could charge a fix rate and a standard-price for each. In the end it wouldn’t really matter.

So my first answer ist “something like 5 to 10 Euros” (for small quantities) – of course less, if you take a larger amount or I don’t need to spend much time for an individual art-work.

As you are the first person asking and as an insentive for your good conscience; I would route the money to the Raumfahrtagentur, where I would produce them – it’s a cool hardware-hackerspace here in Berlin. (Ok, maybe I’ll take a beer or two.)

Cool! I’ll need about 200 a 300 pieces. I’m a sort of underground recording-artist. Engraving on front and back would be great. I can sent vector-files (as soon as I have designed them). I will probably need the CD-cases in november 2012. So if you can make a total price for that, I can check if it is within my budget :) Thanks!

Yeah, large(r) quantities! We are on it (in means of calculating). Seems like that we’ll need to work with a partner on that, but have two good contacts therefore here in Berlin. Stay tuned :)

Cool, to lower the costs I can probably do the glueing myself.
        cheers, Alex

I got two quotes by small fablabs here in Berlin and solely the production-costs are with about 5-6 Euros per piece, as I could imagine, to high for your quantity. (I don’t mention the first quote, puuh.)

So I have now asked bigger laser-cutting companies for fabrication and I assume that these will be quite cheaper. I will inform you as soon as I have their quotes.

Nevertheless I tested the magnetic-lid and it looks promising. I can mail you a prototype with your soccer-player on the cover and two magnets. I assume that one slightly stronger magnet (already ordered some for testing) will work perfect. The magnets are about 20-25cent each.

    Yeah nice work!

I feel like I want to have some of them, too for passing my work to my clients. I don’t need such a large amount at the beginning – is it possible to get one as an example before ordering? :)

    Hi Alex, Hi Frank,

I still have to require the file (doing that today in the evening), for getting precise quotes. Nevertheless I started collecting things for an enhancement: A magnetic-lit. The idea is to embed a magnet in the second layer of the back-part and leave a drop of metallic-ink on the cover-backside.

I am about to produce some prototypes and samples. (Yes, for frank as well). So if you have some artwork or text ready …

A word on artwork: Using vector-files is much more efficient than rastering grey-scale images; those are time-intensive and the usable area is much smaller. For getting good effects with small text; using single-line fonts (see subtitle of this website for ex.) makes it much nicer to read. Search for “single line fonts” and find sites like those: https://cleversomeday.wordpress.com/2009/10/29/pen-fonts-for-your-cricut/

    Sounds very nice!

As I don’t need any artwork, I won’t send you any files ;)

    Keep me up to date!

    Frank

Ok, so then I will first figure out what the most convincing magnetic lit might be. I think I am on a good way …
